Corkscrew, 2013
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary contains the largest remaining stand of ancient bald cypress trees in North America. Managed by the National Audubon Society, the sanctuary is located in southwest Florida. When I first visited the sanctuary in 2003 I was struck by the native beauty and sense that this was a rare oasis of what remained of aboriginal South Florida. Though a Mecca for birders and wildlife enthusiasts, I was interested in the flora and play of light on form and water. Returning every year for ten years I found the place different year to year. Seasonal rains would provide sometimes more and sometimes less water in the swamp. The vegetation would vary and atmosphere and light would change. The still water may glow like a pool of liquid silver or be dark as India ink, and reflections merge with the visual plane in magical ambiguities of space.
