In Color, 1987-1998

Beginning in 1987 and continuing until around 2000 I photographed exclusively in color for my art work. This new color imagery is very much inclined to the human built world of polychrome structures, with a palette of vivid man-made colors set amid natural hues. Architecture and engineering dominate, from roadside ephemera to industrial heroic. One project within this period was a survey along the Lincoln Highway from Bedford in central Pennsylvania, to Pittsburgh in western Pennsylvania. Many photographs of roadside attractions are from this survey. The over-arching theme of these photographs is the relentless pressure of humans on the environment. I looked for a formal tension and counterpoint between the subtle and the obvious. The human condition is seen via the place.
